Album Blues Joseph William “Pinetop” Perkins (1913-2011)

Blues legend Joe Willie “Pinetop” Perkins died at his home in Austin, Texas, on Monday at age 97. Perkins was a Blues pianist who began his 80-year career touring alongside guitarist Earl Hooker and later as part of the Muddy Waters band. The Mississippi native then joined the Chicago-based group, The Legendary Blues Band, releasing a series of recordings from the 1970s into the 1990s.

He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2003 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Earlier this year he earned another Grammy, with collaborator Willie “Big Eyes” Smith for their album “Joined at the Hip,” making him the oldest person to ever receive the honor. Perkins also established a foundation in his name, which trains aspiring Mississippi musicians in either the piano and guitar, according to Perkins’ website.

“… The great irony of Pinetop’s career is that he didn’t blossom as a headliner until his eighth decade – a phenomenon that resulted in the release of 15 solo records in 15 years, beginning in 1992.”
